I was immediately drawn to this organic minimalism. After glazing them I discovered just how endless the possibilities with these could be. The Summer of 2015 is when I decided to make 100 of these forms in varying shapes and sizes, but all conforming to fit my right hand.
Now, these 100 Relics will be fired with a number of various finishes and some may be painted by fellow artists. However long it takes, they will make their way out into the world as free pieces of art.

Hello and Happy New Year! :) With the hustle and bustle of the second half of the year behind me, its safe to say that I'm looking forward to the year that is ahead of us all. I've got a lot planned, but this post is about last year. 2014 was pretty big for Kuro-Same Arts on a number of levels, one of which being that I finally launched my Build-Your-Own Doctor Who Adventure Charm Bracelets at Modern Mouse in December. They were a big hit over the holidays and I'm super stoked to have them there for Mouse-going Whovians. This year, I'm hope to add more charms to mix of course, hopefully more episodes and enemies, since those have been most difficult to source. Stay tuned! Working backwards from December, 2014 also saw the biggest number of Wizards produced since their beginning in 2011, a total of 6 new series and 20 wizards! Plus, this is less celebratory, but I saw my first batch of Wizard thefts in the studio last year. Someone liked them enough to steal 3 of the little guys, lets just hope they're in good homes. I'm very excited to announce that I will be doing a Wizard: Guest Artist Series this year, collaborating with a number of other artists on the creation of Wizards! I've already got nearly two dozen amazing folks lined up to participate, including Artery Press, Cindy Gieng, Mary Rose Branchaud (owner of Starbaby Studio),Terry Furry and more! This project will start seeing results in the coming months~ I was at Studio 23 for their 1st Anniversary art show, the 100 Under 100. Nearly two dozen wizards were at this show and though none sold, I found some great art for myself and made some new friends. Twas quite fun and I look forward to seeing what they do for their anniversary this year. Last year also saw the launch of #FreeArtToFind, a social media experiment primarily based on my Instagram account, where I left (for now just) ceramic pieces in urban areas and posted them online for others to find. These pieces are studio works that have been left behind, forgotton or discarded. I've glazed a number of them myself for experimentiation. I also started #FreeArtToFind subsets like #PostcardFromKuro & #KuroSkull, ceramic postcards and clay impressions of my ring respectively. This project has been fun since its launch and I look forward to continuing it this year. A LOT of new jewelry and accessories found its way into Modern Mouse throughout the year, including Rings and Whovian Dapper Accessories. And just this year, I started offering Pocket Watches at Modern Mouse! Thanks for dropping by and reading through, I'm hoping to keep things more updated on this blog, but if not, you can always find me on all the Social Media outlets below! :) Until next time,
~ Kuro-Same ~ Facebook.com/KuroSameArts Instagram.com/KuroSameArts Twitter.com/KuroSameArts Ello.co/matttheshark Pinterest.com/therealshark Email: [email protected] Happy May to you! :] Thanks for dropping by, I'll hopefully soon be working out a better way to shop online for a more extensive portion of my collection, if not all of it, so stay tuned~ This year I have the opportunity to be part of the Altered Paintings Exhibition at Redux Studios in Alameda. I found a great piece from their selections, but with only a week before the due date, I had to figure out my plans sooner than later! I decided to roll with something I'm familiar with, building off of my Steampunk-inspired roots. This piece was a lot of fun to work with and I may do more in the future. Opening night is on the 11th if you're able to swing by~ Wizard Series 3 & 4 are all done with their first firings, ready for glaze! The Wizards had to wait their turn though. Once my glaze tests came back from the stoneware firing, my focus turned to the buildings for my self portrait piece. I have to say, I had a fairly good idea of how they were going to come out post-firing, but they turned out so much better than I imagined. I'm thoroughly satisfied with the results! By popular demand at Modern Mouse, this month I found myself creating rings. Pictured below you'll see the very first Kuro-Same rings in existence, one of which went to a fairly new friend, Bernadette of Artery Press! Her work is simply amazing, you should check it out sometime or visit her at Swarm (Loakal address, I'm not sure if its still called Swarm or not).
Hello to you! :) I hope you all are well, I've certainly been keeping quite busy between work, personal nonsense and studio work. Speaking of the latter, I will now begin posting behind-the-scenes photos to the blog of what I've been up to every month or so, just as a nice recap; however, to truly stay on top of everything Kuro-Same, you can follow me on Instagram @kurosamearts. Thanks again for swinging by and checking things out! I'm also excited to announce that there is an official Shop page where a number of my sculptures can be purchased, if you're interested. Hopefully soon I will be able to launch a full webstore, but there are a lot of bugs and kinks that need to be worked out beforehand. Hope to catch you on social media, in person or next time on the blog! Hello! :) Things have been kinda dead around here since I was promoted at Modern Mouse, I've been managing since late Summer of last year, but I'm always working on art; however, it does keep me pretty busy since I'm there 5 days a week. I do enjoy it though. I've been waking up pretty early lately, not just for work or college classes, so I've been able to get even more done lately. First and foremost, I'd like to thank everyone taking the time to read this. You could be off doing other social media things, but here you are! That means a lot to me and I really feel the support. As I announced, last year in my first blog post, Mynt (my lady) and I did have that show at Pixies & Peony in October. It was a lot of fun being there for the second year in a row, this time with her. She sold a handful of pieces and I couldn't be more proud. We had a really great time and are truly thankful to everyone who showed up! We couldn't have done it without ya. I mentioned above that I am still in college, taking classes, working towards finishing my "GE" requirements and transferring to either a local CSU or, as of recently, moving onto an online college. My focus, naturally, is art and business. No matter where our art takes Mynt and I, we do plan on finishing college, so we've got a lot on our plates between classes, work, art and everything else that involves our personal lives. As if that wasn't enough for us, we are planning on collaborating on a new art business involving primarily home decor & stationary. Fun combo, right? We've already got a name and the first product line laid out, its just a matter of pulling everything together for the launch, so stay tuned! I'm sure to be posting about it in the future. Anyway, part of the reason of this post was to mention that as much as I'd like to upkeep the blog and everything involving my website, I just haven't found time since the last updates; however, I do plan on working much harder on making this a priority, maybe even get a webstore launched this year, hehe. Well thank you for stopping by! That should about do it for now. If you're looking for Kuro-Same merch, you can currently find it at Modern Mouse and Starbaby Studio, both in Alameda. Until next time~ Just in time for Halloween, some of my latest sculptures will be included in this show at Pixies & Peony in Alameda in October! Appearing with me will be my significant other. This will be her debut installation under the name Mynto Fresh and is not something you want to miss. Her paintings and illustrations depict various depths of life and thought processes that can sometimes be left untouched or unexplored, eliciting feelings of intense beauty, unsettling reflection and veiled realism. Pixies & Peony is an independently owned, mother-daughter project that combines shopfront wares with gallery arts and DIY gardening. Pixies & Peony is filled with a collection of local art, new & vintage items, refinished/re-purposed furniture and plants. |
